TAKE EFFECTIVE STEPS TO BAIL OUT THE FARMERS OF THE COUNTRY FROM THE VICIOUS CIRCLE OF INDEBTNESS AND POVERTY- CHANDUMAJRA

New Delhi/Chandigarh, March 14- Lok Sabha MP from Sri Anandpur Sahib Prof. Prem Singh Chandumajra today impressed upon the Government of India (GoI) to take effective steps to bail out the farmers of the country from the vicious circle of indebtness and poverty.

Taking part in the debate on union budget in the Parliament today, the Prof. Chandumajra said that the need of the hour was to make the farmers debt free by enacting a law on the formula of Sir Chotu Ram, so that farmers was not forced to pay amount double to the Principle amount by the money lenders. He said that the policies like Crop Insurance Scheme and Soil Health card could give temporary relief to the farmers but could not solve the entire problem. He said that the next step to bail out the farmers was to implement the recommendations of renowned agri-expert Dr MS Swaminathan, so that they could get remunerative prices of produce.

Prof. Chandumajra also laid stress on allowing export of all the items from Wahga- Attari border to boost the prospects of the farming community. He bemoaned that currently export of only 65 items was allowed instead of total 300. He also advocated the formation of Separate Corporation for less water guzzling crops along with Basmati Export Corporation.

Seeking special status for Punjab, Prof. Chandumajra said that being a border state Punjab needs special consideration. He also sought special incentives for the farmers of border districts of Punjab so that impetus could be given to the overall development of the border region.

Prof. Chandumajra also sought special incentives for the industry on the state on the lines of being given to the hilly states to give boost to industrialisation in the state.

The Lok Sabha MP also demanded that Sri Anandpur Sahib must be developed as a hub of Tourism besides batting for setting up a Military Training Academy and giving special assistance for saving the crops of the farmers from the wild animals.
