CHANDIGARH, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president Capt Amarinder Singh today suspected the credentials as well as the intentions of the Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on the resolution he moved in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha today against the construction of the SYL canal.
Besides, the PCC president pointed out, Mr Badal had neither wisdom nor or any intentions of his own to present such resolution and he did it only after learning that Congress was to move a resolution to this effect.
“You cannot be party to a stand at the centre and then pass a resolution in the state legislature condemning the same stand which you have already supported at the centre”, he said, while telling Mr Badal, “you cannot run with the hare and hunt with the hounds, which you are trying to do”.
Capt Amarinder said, while every well meaning Punjabi was opposed to the construction of the SYL and would naturally support any move that prevents construction of the SYL canal, Mr Badal’s credentials and intentions were too doubtful to be trusted.
He pointed out, Badal’s Akali Dal was part of the BJP led NDA government at the centre where his daughter in law Harsimrat Kaur Badal is a minister.
“Whatever decisions the NDA takes at the centre, SAD is naturally part of it under the principle of collective responsibility of the government”, he pointed out, while arguing, “when the central government through its Solicitor General makes a statement in the Supreme Court of India that it favoured construction of the SYL, Akali Dal becomes equally responsible”.
He said, the Akali Dal’s resolution in Punjab Vidhan Sabha now is meaningless when they have actually been party to centre’s stand in Supreme Court that favours Haryana and goes against Punjab.
The PCC president said, if Mr Badal’s intentions were well meaning and sincere towards Punjab, the least he could have done was to withdraw his daughter in law from the government in protest as also withdrawing his party’s support to the NDA which has taken a stand against Punjab. Besides, he added, his party should also have severed ties with the BJP in Punjab.
“But Badal has not done any of these things and nor was he going to do anything like that, as his real intention has always been to stick to power come what may even if it means putting Punjab’s precious waters and interests at stake”, he remarked.
