Chandigarh, March 6 : The former Punjab Congress President Mr Partap Singh Bajwa while castigating the Chief Minister Mr Parkash Singh Badal for total apathy towards the families of distressed farmers and farm workers who have been forced by the situation to commit suicide, gave a call to the people to take revenge in the forthcoming Assembly election by pushing the ruling Akali Dal towards oblivion.
He said while such families continue to wait for compensation from the government, all the more shocking was the blatantly indifferent attitude of the administration as evident from plight of an elderly couple whose son committed suicide in October last but none had taken any pain to provide relief to this family of Ghal Kalan village near Moga. The wife of the deceased had earlier died of brain cancer and the family of marginal farmer had come under debt of about Rs 5 lakh.
He said this was not a solitary example as the families in several cases have been waiting for years for help from the government. However, this wait has been endless.
He took the Deputy Chief Minister Mr Sukhbir Singh Badal to task for presenting a “rosy” picture in his presentation two days back about which big ads had now been inserted in all the newspapers but the irony was that he failed to touch upon this sensitive issue. He said the reality was diametrically opposite to what the Deputy Chief Minister had been trying to convey. He asserted people could not be fed white lies and he should go around villages, not as a orchestrated tour, to see the reality.
In this context, he also questioned Mr Sukhbir Badal about the non-disbursal of compensation to the cotton pickers announced in October last. Moreover, it was not much of a financial burden but still, the Badal government was still to come to their rescue. He said these were the people who were from the poorest strata of Punjabi society..
