Chandigarh, A delegation of Akali MPs led by Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa today met Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh to lodge protest against the statement of the Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju regarding Punjab’s disturbed area status.
Some days ago, Rijiju was quoted as saying that the notification declaring Punjabdisturbed area under the Disturbed Area Act could not be revoked because the state continued to be disturbed.
Dhindsa and other Akali MPs urged Rajnath Singh to immediately issue a clarification on behalf of the Union Home Ministry stating that Punjab was no more a disturbed state and the notification declaring it as disturbed area was never extended beyond 1997 and hence there is no question of revoking it.
While lodging the protest, Akali leaders told the Home Minister that Rijiju’s statement has caused immense damage to the state. It had created an atmosphere of uncertainty among investors. Prem Singh Chandumajra, who was a member of the delegation, said while the state government was trying hard to bring investment to the state, Rijiju had put a cold water on the state government’s efforts by making such a statement.
