CHANDIGARH, November 7: Congress Deputy Leader in the Lok Sabha Capt Amarinder Singh today said that the meagre hike of Rs 75 per quintal in the minimum support price (MSP) of wheat was a cruel joke with the farmers.
He said, given the crisis agrarian economy was facing, particularly in the states like Punjab where farmers are committing suicide almost every day this meagre hike will not serve any purpose.
The former Chief Minister pointed out, the basmati rates have come down from Rs 3400 per quintal last year to Rs 1400 per quintal this year. He said, it is high time that the government of India took agrarian crisis seriously and on priority. He said, to begin with it could followed the Swaminathan Commission recommendations while fixing the prices for the farm products.
