Chandigarh, 30 Sep : Terming the Bharitiya Kisan Union (Lakhowal) Protest on farming issues a farce, the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee today said that BKU President Ajmer Singh Lakhowal has no moral right to hold protest, as he is enjoying government luxuries by selling the interests of farmers to Shiromani Akali Dal.
In a press release issued here, Senior Congress leader Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa said that Lakhowal have committed a travesty by holding a protest and blocking roads, as it is crystal clear that he never taken up any farming issue in last eight years to enjoy chairmanship of Punjab Mandi Board in the rank of Cabinet Minister of Punjab.
Randhawa even demanded a probe into the assets of Lakhowal.
Terming the BKU (Lakhowal) call to block road traffic on Wednesday as a cruel joke with peasants, Randhawa said that why didn’t he resigned from the Chairmanship of Mandi board, when farmers were cheated by selling spurious pesticides in Malwa cotton belt, sugarcane growers faced problem of payments and farmers faced troubles during selling of wheat and rice crops in Mandis.
“For a Cabinet Rank Chairmanship, Lakhowal had sold all interests of farming community to Badals. He has now become a puppet into hands of Badals”, said Randhawa. He asked Lakhowal to list his achievements, if any, for farming community in last eight years of partnership with BAdal government.
Randhawa further question Lakhowal over his silence of non-implementation of Swaminathan Commission Report by NDA government. “In election PM Narendra Modi and Punjab CM PS Badal, had promised to implement Swaminathan Commission report. However, after coming to power the Centre in affidavit in Supreme Court has declined to implement it. You (Lakhowal) are well aware of facts, but kept a calculated silence to enjoy government luxuries”, said Randhawa asking Lakhowal to come clean on this issue.
He said that as the anger of the Punjabi farmers is simmering against the NDA government and Punjab Government, thus Lakhowal is trying to divert the attention and sabotage the protest of genuine farmers.
He asked Lakhowal that instead of holding protest on roads, the BKU leader must hold sit in front of CM PS Badal’s residence, demand removal of Agricultural Minister Tota Singh for pesticide scam, and ask farmers to boycott Modi for not keeping the promise to implement the Swaminathan’s report.
