Katju talks of corruption at higher levels in judiciary

Chandigarh, September 28: Former Supreme Court Judge Justice Markenday Katju today conceded that there was corruption in the higher echelon of judiciary.

He was here at a function organized by the Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar Association to celebrate birth anniversary of Shaheed Bhagat Singh.

He said such persons even get elevated to the high courts. At the same time, he pointed to the indirect interference of the government in the government in the appointment of judges.

He expressed his views on the use of English as the court language too saying it was a legacy of slavery and favoured change to Indian languages. He said there was no reason as to why the work could not be carried out in Punjabi and Hindi in case the chief ministers from Punjab and Haryana took up this issue. He said the two chief ministers should be pressured on this issue..

He demanded probe into the allegations of corruption against some of the judges at the higher level.
