WINDSOR, Ont. — The Conservatives are promising to spend up to $100 million to help manufacturing firms get their projects to market.
The money wouldn’t flow right away: the funds would become available in the 2017-18 fiscal year and be spread over five years.
The Tories want to put the money into a fund that would go to private companies working with small- and medium-sized businesses, universities or colleges to commercialize a project or idea.
The Conservatives argue the fund should help Canadian companies keep pace in the global market with competitors from Japan, Germany, Korea and the United Kingdom.
Conservative Leader Stephen Harper made the commitment Sunday while campaigning in Windsor, Ont., home to a large auto sector and the busiest commercial land crossing between Canada and the United States.
The announcement comes days after Statistics Canada reported increased sales for the third quarter of 2015 in the manufacturing, motor vehicles and auto parts sectors.
