VANCOUVER — A Liberal candidate in Alberta is apologizing for comments he made on social media six years ago, saying he was under the influence of alcohol at the time after losing his partner in a car crash.
Christopher Brown made the apology Thursday after screen grabs of tweets showed messages using profane language, including derogatory language in reference to women.
In his written apology distributed by the party, Brown said after a drunk driver killed his partner, he became dependent on alcohol, leading to a “complete lack of judgment while posting on social media.”
He said he isn’t proud of this period in his life, but that the tweets don’t reflect who he is today.
Brown is running in the riding of Peace River-Westlock.
The party has yet to say what it plans to do with another candidate whose Facebook posts included a link to an academic paper suggesting marijuana decreases domestic violence, and comments that the Canadian Cancer Society supports the pharmaceutical industry by refusing to study the benefits of marijuana use on cancer.
Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau said Thursday the views expressed by Joy Davies, who is running in the British Columbia riding of South Surrey-White Rock, don’t reflect his nor those of the Liberal party.
Trudeau said he will have more to say about Davies’ situation later Thursday.
