MONTREAL — NDP Leader Tom Mulcair says Canadians shouldn’t expect any financial help from Ottawa for professional sports franchises if he becomes prime minister.
Mulcair made the comments today in Montreal, where the mayor is pushing hard to bring back a big league baseball team.
The NDP leader says he’d love to see a group of businessmen get together to bring back a team to fill the hole left when the Expos departed in 2004.
But he says taxpayers shouldn’t be asked to pay for franchises that are worth billions of dollars.
Quebec City is also seeking a NHL franchise after the city and province spent hundreds of millions of dollars on a new arena.
Mulcair visited the riding office of his candidate for the central Montreal riding of NDG-Westmount, which is currently represented by Liberal Marc Garneau, the first Canadian to go to space.
