Liberals play up economic credentials in face of Conservative attack ads

TORONTO — The federal Liberals are putting on a display of star power in an attempt to burnish their economic credentials as waves of uncertainty grip the markets and potentially unsettle voters.
Former prime minister Paul Martin was pressed into service, a not so subtle attempt to remind voters that as finance minister under Jean Chretien’s Liberal government, he oversaw the elimination of the federal deficit.
Other candidates from across the country, many of them with impressive resumes, turned up at an event in Toronto, which is turning into a key battle ground for the three major parties.
The emphasis on “the team” is something the Liberals are hoping to play up in the face of unrelenting Conservative attack ads that paint Justin Trudeau as “not ready” and unable to handle serious issues such as global economic uncertainty and the market meltdown over the last few days.
Trudeau opened himself up for attack recently by saying in Saskatchewan that the country’s economy doesn’t grow from the top down but from the middle class “heart outwards” — remarks that were ridiculed by Conservatives.
The Liberals have at the centre of their economic plan a middle class tax cut and a proposal to impose higher taxes on the country’s wealthiest one per cent, but have had a hard time countering the perception created by the ads.
