Canadian dollar, TSX down in early trading

TORONTO — The Canadian dollar was down half a U.S. cent and North American stock markets dipped early Thursday.

The loonie traded at 76.50 cents US, down 0.58 of a U.S. cent from Wednesday.

Toronto’s S&P/TSX composite index was down 41.87 points at 14,297.66, after falling 75 points on Wednesday.

The Dow Jones industrial average was down 13.26 points at 17,389.25, the Nasdaq index was up 0.4 point to 5,044.79, and the S&P 500 fell 3.1 point to 2,082.95.

On the commodity markets, the December gold contract fell $7.70 to US$1,115.90 an ounce, the September crude contract was down $1.01 at US$42.29 a barrel and the September contract for natural gas was down one cent at US$2.85.
