Scores of fans have saluted him for his cricketing endeavours over the years. Sachin Tendulkar himself though bows his head to one man who has played a huge role in making him the legend that he is – coach Ramakant Achrekar. On the auspicious occasion of Guru Purnima – an Indian festival dedicated to spiritual and academic teachers — Tendulkar greeted 83-year-old Achrekar and once again thanked him for teaching him all he knows about cricket. “Sought blessings of my Guru on this auspicious day – A happy #GuruPurnima to all,” Tendulkar tweeted on Friday. He also posted images on his official Facebook page which showed him touching Achrekar’s feet and sharing a smile with him.Tendulkar’s association with Achrekar dates back to when he was still in school. Elder brother Ajit had taken him to Achrekar, who used to coach aspiring players in Shivaji Park.
It was Achrekar who suggested that Tendulkar switch schools to Sharadashram Vidyamandir (English) High School which was known to have a dominant cricket team. It was just one of many ways Achrekar helped Tendulkar achieve excellence.
In many subsequent interviews, Achrekar said that the spark and talent was always visible in Tendulkar. Grooming though plays a big part in taking a sportsperson in the right direction and Tendulkar’s unwavering devotion towards his cricket coach is testament to how behind every superhero – there is a super mentor indeed.
