Capt urges Khalsa to end fast

Chandigarh, July 25
Former Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh today supported Surat Singh Khalsa’s demand for release of prisoners who have completed their sentences. He also appealed to Khalsa to end his fast in the interest of the people of the state. In a statement issued here today, Capt Amarinder said Khalsa’s demand was totally justified since it was against the Constitution to keep somebody behind bars when he had completed his sentence.
“I have been reiterating that nowhere in the civilised and democratic world anybody is made to stay behind bars after the completion of his sentence,” he said.
He said even the Supreme Court had clarified that states could take a call on such prisoners. He expressed surprise as to why Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal was delaying and complicating the matter.
