Jalandhar MP meets Parrikar, wants Cantt Act amended

p4New Delhi, July 22
Jalandhar MP Santokh Chaudhary today met Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar to seek changes to the Cantonments Act 2006 which allows sweeping powers to bureaucrats and the Cantonment Board head.
The Lok Sabha member from the Congress said the power of tax assessment of houses and shops in the cantonment area needed to be restored to the Civil Area Committee, as was the practice until the Cantonments Act 2006 was enacted.
“Residents of cantonments should be free to avail bank loans without the prior approval of the Cantonment Board. Also, the subdivision of property in the cantonment area should be allowed without hassles and the users of the Old Grant Property, who had settled a century ago, should be given freehold rights,” the MP said.
He demanded that the people in the cantonment area be given permission for the construction of multi-storey buildings to meet their growing need for space and accommodation.
“There is also a need for the restoration of freehold rights to the people who were allotted houses and land with freehold registry in their name at the time of the Partition under the Rehabilitation and Compensation Act,” he said.
Chaudhary also took up the demand for a civil airport at Adampur during his meeting with Parrikar.
