Toronto rail routes suspended after CN train derails in Bowmanville

Toronto:Passenger rail service has been suspended on a number of Toronto routes after a CN freight train derailed in Bowmanville Saturday afternoon.
The train went off the rails near Port Darlington Road in Bowmanville around 2 p.m.
Images from the scene showed several cars crumpled to the side of the tracksAs a result, passenger service has been suspended between Montreal and Toronto and Ottawa and Toronto for the rest of the day, Via Rail said on its Twitter page Saturday afternoon.
The company said it was attempting to arrange alternative transportation for affected passengers. However it said it was having difficulty due to a shortage of buses because of the Pan Am Games.
About 700 passengers were on trains that were halted because of the derailment, while a total of 1,500 passengers were affected by the service suspension.
It’s not clear what caused the derailment or what the train was carrying when it derailed.
The area around the scene was evacuated for a short time until it was determined that no hazardous material was involved, a police source told reporters.
No injuries were reported.
Via Rail said service between Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal is expected to resume some time on Sunday morning.
