Sinha made no remark against Aircel-Maxis case : CBI

New Delhi, With its chief facing allegations in the Supreme Court that he overruled the recommendations of his investigators and the agency’s Director of Prosecution to file a charge sheet against accused persons in the Aircel-Maxis case, the Central Bureau of Investigation on Saturday denied that Director Ranjit Sinha ever said there was “no case made out” in the deal.

In fact, an application filed in the Supreme Court by Ashok Tewari, Joint Director, CBI, Delhi Zone, says Mr. Sinha was merely considering his investigators’ views that there is “some weakness in the prosecutable evidence” in the case.

These contentions are part of a response to a demand raised by NGO Centre for Public Interest Litigation in court that Mr. Sinha should be recused from participating in any manner in the 2G inquiry or trial.

“The entire averment made with regard to the case of Mr. Maran and M/s Maxis that the Director overruled his own investigating officers is clearly false to the knowledge of the deponent [CBI] and a case of perjury needs to be registered,” the application said.

In a section of the application titled ‘Attempting to save Mr. Maran and M/s Maxis’, the CBI informs there was a difference of opinion between the CBI Director of Prosecution and officers, including Santosh Rastogi, Head of Branch, CBI, and as to whether 10 accused persons in the case should be charge-sheeted.
