Driving Naari Programme launched in Chandigarh
Amritsar, In his first visit after leaving the office, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh came to Amritsar to attend the “bhog” of his sister’s father-in-law.
He was accompanied by his wife at the “bhog” of Ram Singh Chatha, father of APS Chatha, a local hotelier and close relative.
The former Prime Minister had earlier planned to visit the holy city in July last year. However, he cancelled the visit in view of a Panthic convention called by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee on the same day on the issue of a separate gurdwara committee for Haryana. It was later assumed that he had cancelled the visit to avoid any controversy.
Earlier in the day, he was given a guard of honour by the Punjab Police on his arrival at the Circuit House. National SC Commission Vice-Chairman Raj Kumar Verka and other party leaders also welcomed him there.
In the evening, Singh and his wife paid obeisance at the Golden Temple, where he listened to “kirtan” while sitting inside the sanctum sanctorum. SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar also honoured him with a ‘siropa’ and a model of the holy shrine.
