Toronto —- Toronto Mayor John Tory visited the family of Lecent Ross Saturday afternoon, two days after the 14-year-old girl was killed by a bullet from a restricted handgun in a Rexdale townhome.
Tory told CP24 he went to see Ross’ relatives at a townhome on Jamestown Crescent so he could have a heart to heart with Lecent’s mom and other family members.
Sources tell CP24 Tory told the family he has heard their concerns about the widespread availability of handguns in their neighboruhood and the attitudes of some not to speak to authorities after deadly events occur.
Ross suffered a single gunshot wound after a .40-calibre Smith & Wesson handgun was fired inside a home on Jamestown Crescent at around 10:30 a.m. Thursday morning.
She was found without vital signs at the scene, and was rushed to hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after her arrival, never regaining consciousness.
Her mother, Alicia Jasquith, told reporters Friday that her daughter had dreams of becoming a lawyer and was a straight-A student. She implored anyone with information about how her daughter came to be shot to speak to police immediately.
Friends and neighbours of Ross began filtering past her home Saturday afternoon as part of a vigil devoted to her memory. They scrawled messages of condolence onto white boards and left plants and flowers on the sidewalk.
“I greatly appreciate everything that everybody’s been doing. It means a lot,” Lecent Ross’s sister, Kajauna Ross, told CP24 Saturday evening.
She said she wanted as many people as possible to contribute to a fundraiser her family has set up to raise money to cover funeral expenses.
The GoFundMe page raised $4,000 by Saturday evening,
