Calgary: There was sad news from the Calgary Stampede Saturday night — a horse was euthanized after breaking a leg while competing in a chuckwagon race.
A release issued by Stampede communications manager Kristina Barnes says the 10-year old thoroughbred named “Duke” broke a right hind leg — specifically a cannon bone — apparently when it came into contact with another wagon.
The veterinarian on site determined the horse needed to be put down immediately.
The driver of the wagon “Duke” was hitched to, Layne Bremner, received a $2,500 penalty and a five second penalty for interference.
The release adds there will be a thorough review of the incident to determine if there was any way it might have been prevented.
