We must add depth in singles: Leander Paes

Mumbai, Leander Paes believes that India need to switch to a more physical game if they have to compete with the best in the world.

“We need to look at the depth in our singles. In doubles we have depth as I and Rohan (Bopanna) play on the higher tours. There are three four teams who play on the Asian level but as compared to the world level it’s a different story altogether. At the world level we have three teams who can do really well but in singles there’s only Somdev (Devvarman) who is strong, fit and puts his heart in everything. But he also needs support,” Paes said on the sidelines of a tennis clinic at Khar Gymkhana on Thursday.

Paes said Indians have never had a great service game and have banked upon their reflexes more than anything in their pursuit of a win. But if they need to succeed in Grand Slams, they need to develop more power centric skill sets.

“Somdev never had a big first serve. He has a solid second serve. He doesn’t double fault much. His game is more oriented towards his physicality and his running. So, the Indians definitely need to improve their entire game. Indians are more intellectual kind but when it comes to physicality and power we definitely need to improve. It’s a lot about technique, using your legs a lot etc.”

Talking about the Asian Games, Paes said: “We have guys like Sanam, Saketh and Divij in the squad. This is also lots of experience for the youngsters. They have a lot of potential, lot of talent. This is a stage where they can show they can shine. If they come back with any medal it will be really nice. I have high hopes in mixed doubles,” said the 14-time Grand Slam winner.
