New Delhi: Australia’s prodigious Steven Smith failed to notch up his first Test double-ton agonisingly by one run on Friday in the second Test against West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica. An in-swinging yorker from Jerome Taylor undid the right-handed batsman.

Carrying on from a splendid summer at home, which included a series win over India and World Cup triumph, the 26-year-old played 361 balls before falling to a leg before decision by the English umpire Ian Gould.
Despite the disappointment of failing to achieve the feat, Smith held firm to help the visiting side post 399 all out in the first innings. In the process, he also became the only batsman to score more than 2000 runs over the last two years.

In the last six Test matches, the New South Wales batsman has scored five centuries, including a 192 against India at Melbourne.

Last Australian batsman to get out at 199 was Steve Waugh against West Indies in 1999, and the last one to hit a double hundred was Jason Gillespie against Bangladesh in 2006. The fast bowler hit an unbeaten 201 in his last Test innings.
