New Delhi: Swashbuckling opener Chris Gayle claimed that despite people calling him the king of Twenty20, he is the king of all formats.
Talking to ESPNcricinfo, the West Indian said that, with two triple centuries in Test cricket and 21 centuries in One Day Internationals, he is the king of all formats of the game.
“People all say Chris is the king of T20, Chris is the this and that of T20, I am the king of Test cricket too… I scored two triple centuries. And 21 ODI centuries. So I’m the king of something. The king of all formats,” the 35-year-old was quoted as saying.
Gayle, who has a history of falling out of the West Indies team, is currently plying his trade for Somerset in the NatWest T20 Blast, while his Caribbean team is taking on the visiting Australian team. He ruled himself out of the West Indies reckoning due to a lingering back-injury and T20 commitments.
To prove his contention, the Jamaican – in his 269 ODI matches – has scored 9221 runs with 22 hundreds at a strike rate of 85.11. In Test cricket, he has 7214 runs at an average of 42.18 in 103 matches with 15 hundreds. And in T20 Internationals, he has 1406 runs from 45 matches with a century at a strike rate of 142.59.
