* POWERCOM all set to prepare disaster management plan

Chandigarh, June 3 – In a major move to deal with any kind of unforeseen natural calamity like earthquake, flood, sabotage or grid failures the Punjab State Power Corporation Ltd. (PSPCL) and Punjab State Transmission Corporation Ltd. (PSTCL) are all set to launch a “disaster management plan” by December this.

A spokesman of the Power department today said the PSPCL and PSTCL responsible to generate, transmit, distribute and maintain power supply system in the state have devised a comprehensive disaster management strategy for power utilities so as to make the power available under all adversities to the citizens. “This plan is aimed at restoration of power supply as quickly as possible, minimal damage to power infrastructure and achieving zero causality in case of natural or man-made disasters”, he said.

Giving details the spokesman informed that a team of technical experts, electricians and engineers would be prepared by imparting them special trainings about the steps to be taken during any eventuality. He said as per the plan Punjab government has appointed nodal officers in all departments for better coordination in any kind of disaster and newly setup team of POWERCOM would also work in coordination with them.

He said all organizations of POWERCOM including generation, transmission, distribution and maintenance were interconnected and its vital infrastructure needs to be protected in case of natural calamities and disasters. He said in accordance with the state plan POWERCOM would draw up mitigation, preparedness and response plans including capacity-building, data collection, assessing the damage from any disaster and carrying out rehabilitation and reconstruction of power supply and infrastructure.

He said interested individuals/firms may submit their EOI to provide consultancy services for carrying out relevant studies and develop disaster management plan for state power utilities including imparting training to specific group of personnel.
