Jalandhar, May 31: Sending out a stern warning to the Union as well as state governments for taking the issue of release of political prisoners lightly, the Sikh bodies under the banner of Committee for the Release of Political prisoners (CRPP) today blocked rail traffic for two hours and vowed to step up the agitation in case government failed to free those Sikh prisoners who had completed maximum term in prison.
The groups that joined hands to spearhead the campaign for release of prisoners include the Dal Khalsa, Akali Dal Mann, Akali Dal Panch Pardani, United Akali Dal, Damdami Taksal Ajnala, Sikh Youth of Punjab, and Akand Kirtani Jatha.
It may be mentioned that octogenarian Surat Singh has who is on hunger strike since Jan 16 seeking release of prisoners who have completed their prison term and today’s agitation was in his support.
The Sikh activists in hundreds led by Manjinder Singh Jandi, Amrik Singh Ajnala, Gurdeep Singh, Jaskaran Singh kahan Singh wala, Bhai Mohkam Singh and Ranbir Singh blocked Delhi-Amritsar rail track and staged dharna for two hours that led to delay of several trains. The protestors sat at Jalandhar railway station and urged the government to act swiftly and positively. They were of the view that government was not serious and paying only lip service to please the masses. The protest passed off peacefully.
