Chandigarh/New Delhi, May 20: A high level delegation of the Punjab Congress led by Dr. Shakeel Ahmad General Secretary AICC & Incharge Punajb Affairs accompanied by S. Partap Singh Bajwa President PPCC today called on the President Mr Pranab Mukherjee and submitted memorandum demanding immediate dismissal of the Akali Dal-BJP government in the state headed by Mr Parkash Singh Badal that had proved to be disastrous for the people.
“There is complete administrative and constitutional failure in Punjab necessitating dismissal of the present government. Once known as the granary and food bowl of the country, the father- son duo comprising the Chief Minister Mr Parkash Singh Badal and his Deputy Chief Minister son Mr Sukhbir Singh Badal have turned Punjab into darkness of gloom and despair due to their ruthless, insensitive, undemocratic, anti- people and oppressive methods. There is no rule of law and the administration of justice has been completely eroded and subverted to suit their business and commercial interests. The bureaucracy and the police are colluding with the ruling Government and acting as Managers to facilitate and promote the businesses of the Badal/Majithia/Kairon families”, the memorandum stated.
It said the people of Punjab were reeling under ‘Goonda Raaj’ of the Akali Dal and anyone who raised his voice was suppressed with strong arm tactics of the police which was acting as a private militia of the Badals. The people were angry and the situation was so volatile and tense that it could explode any moment. Sensing the mood of the people, the Badals along with Mr Sukhbir Badal’s brother-in-law and the Revenue Minister Mr Bikramjit Singh Majithia were conspiring to provoke communal tensions to divert the attention of the people from the burning issues. This might set the clock back and push the state back into the dark days of terrorism. Punjab being a border State, such kind of volatility could cause serious implications for the country.
Referring to the drug menace, the party pointed out that 70% of the population in the state was hooked to narcotics. Even Baba Ramdev had expressed his concern recently over the situation. This fact had also been acknowledged by the recent congregation of judges of the High Court and the sitting Judges of the Supreme Court when they highlighted the issue of drugs in Bathinda recently. Numerous inquiries and investigation were pending regarding the allegations of the involvement of Mr Majithia in this drug racket.
The party expressed concern over deteriorating law and order in the situation leading to jungle raj and alleged the state was being ruled by a mafia. Moreover, pervasive conflict of interest afflicted the functioning of the government whose instrumentalities had been doling out mammoth contracts and work orders worth thousands of crores from the public exchequer to companies owned and controlled by the embers of the Badal, Kairon and Majithia families, who also ironically controlled 26 ministries. In order to confer pecuniary benefits to companies owned and controlled by the family members, tender conditions were tweaked, bids rigged and policies manipulated to serve the business interest of the family.
The Congress also exposed the double speak of the Akali Dal on the land acquisition legislation which the party supported in the Lok Sabha while expressing its opposition outside. The party said on the industrial front, 18770 Industrial units had closed shop during the present. The economy was in complete shambles and the government was not in a position even to pay the salaries and pension of its employees. There was complete fiscal breakdown and the time bomb is ticking when there would be total financial collapse, it added.
