Toronto, About 100 Toronto police officers began wearing small cameras on their uniforms Monday, as part of a year-long pilot project meant to see whether the devices should someday be supplied to all officers.
Officers from the Toronto Anti-Violence Intervention Strategy “TRAVIS” team, along with select traffic officers and members of 55 and 43 divisions began testing various models of body cameras.
It will be the officer’s responsibility to switch the cameras on whenever they receive a call for service or are investigating someone. They must also inform members of the public whenever the camera is recording. Individual officers will not be allowed to edit or delete any of the footage.
Police have said the pilot project is meant to generate raw unbiased accounts of police interactions with members of the public and to protect against false allegations of police wrongdoing.
The pilot project is expected to cost the City of Toronto $500,000.
