Faridkot/Chandigarh, The Punjab Congress President Mr Partap Singh Bajwa today demanded unconditional release of students detained in faridkot jail by May 18 failing which the party would gherao the offices of the Deputy Commissioner and the Senior Superintendent of Police. He said these students had unnecessarily been detained and tortured while registering their protest against the death of young Arshdeep Kaur who had been molested and pushed out of speeding Orbit bus which was their democratic right.
Bajwa scored a major victory in this case as hundreds of Congress leaders and workers staged a dharna outside the Faridkot jail forcing the officials to make the announcement that Section 307 relating to attempt to murder case against these students had been withdrawn. These arrested students included a 13 year student and a girl too.
The parents of these students had also joined the dharna led by Bajwa. It was the framing of these students under Section 307 that had angered the people in the state. The government today buckled under pressure and announced the revocation of this case at the dharna site.
Bajwa demanded the unconditional release of all these students immediately failing which the party would carry on with its next programme of action on May 18.
Bajwa slammed the jail authorities for not allowing him and the parents to meet these detained students despite the fact that he had applied for permission under the rules last evening. He lashed out at the Parkash Singh Badal government for resorting to double standards pointing out that two independent MLAs were allowed to meet these students few days back and the rules were the same. He said it was strange that the leader of the biggest opposition party had been denied permission while this facility had been granted to others.
He made it clear that the Congress would continue to be in forefront in all the struggles against the corrupt and non-functioning Badal government.
“You are in your fifth term as the Chief Minister and this is going to end up as your worst tenure going by the mafia rule in the state. The situation is heading towards anarchy as you have utterly failed to govern with serious blow having been dealt to the system. Your rule would end with this blot on your face”, he told Badal.
Later he also visited the family of students and assured all support on behalf of Congress Party.
