* State government sets ‘six -pont’- agenda for providing world class civic amenities to these towns
Chandigarh, May 8- In a major step aimed at providing world class civic amenities to residents of the cities across the state, the Punjab government has embarked a major scheme providing the facility of water supply, sewerage, Sewerage Treatment Plants (STPs), Streetlights, Roads and parks in all the 165 towns by the end of 2016 at a cost of Rs 5000 crore.
As per the roadmap chalked out by the state government, under the leadership of Punjab Chief Minister Mr. Parkash Singh Badal, Deputy Chief Minister Mr. Sukhbir Singh Badal and Local Government Minister Mr. Anil Joshi, a major thrust would be given to the development of all these towns by ensuring world class civic amenities in them. The focus would be to refurbish the cities with the state-of-the art facilities so that the residents could be benefitted from it on one hand and giving impetus to the overall development of the state on the other. Setting up its ‘six point’ agenda for development of these towns, the state government has given maximum focus on providing facilities of water supply, sewerage, Sewerage Treatment Plants, Streetlights, Roads and parks in all the 165 towns of the state.
The state government has already sets the wheel in motion for achieving this target as the work of providing water supply and sewerage facilities besides setting of STP has already been completed in 46 towns and the work on completing the missing links, providing street lights, Roads and parks in these towns would be completed soon. Likewise, the work for water supply, sewerage and STP facility in 90 towns would be completed by December 2015 of the state thereby paving way for the starting of work for providing Streetlights, Roads and parks in them. In the same manner the work for ensuring water supply, sewerage, Sewerage Treatment Plants, Streetlights, Roads and parks in the remaining 29 towns of the state would also be accomplished by end of year 2016. All these works would entail an expenditure of about Rs 5000 crore.
Reiterating the firm commitment of the state government to provide best civic amenities to the urban residents, Secretary Local Government Mr. Ashok Gupta no stone would be left unturned for achieving this target. He said that the funds for this major project aimed at giving facelift to the cities have already been arranged and the work would be completed in a time bound manner. Mr. Gupta also said that major thrust would be given on the quality of work so the state could be benefitted from it. “The state will witness complete transformation by the end of 2016 with the completion of this work in 165 towns” he added.
