Chandigarh, May 1: Congress Deputy Leader in the Lok Sabha Capt Amarinder Singh today asked the Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal as why most of the crimes committed against women in Punjab in the recent past had an Akali/Badal connection in one way or the other.
“This is bound to happen when the rulers are driven more by vested interests than public good”, he observed in a statement issued here today.
Citing three incidents of the jumping off the running bus by a mother and her daughter in Moga, abduction of a minor girl from Faridkot and the killing of an Assistant Sub Inspector of Police in Amritsar, he pointed out all these had a Badal or an Akali connection.
The former Chief Minister said, the bus in which the mother-daughter duo was molested that forced them to jump off leading to death of the daughter, is operated by the Orbit Transport Company owned by the Badal family. “Had the bus been owned by anyone else, the police would have charged and arrested the owner by now”, he pointed out.
Similarly, one of the main culprits and convicts, in the abduction of a teenaged school girl in broad day light from her house in Faridkot, Dimpy Khaira was an Akali councillor.
“And that is the reason neither you nor any of your party leaders including the then Faridkot MP, who incidentally happened to be a woman herself, did not bother to visit the parents of the abducted girl”, he told Mr Badal.
The culprit in the assassination of Amritsar ASI Ravinderpal Singh was also a senior leader of the Youth Akali Dal, Ranjeet Rana, who was stalking and harassing his daughter.
Capt Amarinder said, these were only some of the cases related to the crimes against women, while there are several other incidents where Akalis are directly responsible but are going scot-free. “Given the immunity accorded to the Akalis by your government, they break the law with all impunity leaving the law enforcement agencies helpless”, he remarked.
“Most of the Akalis as also people working for your transport or cable companies are a law unto themselves as no policeman can dare touch them”, the former Chief Minister observed, while adding, “this is because the SHOs and DSPs are not answerable to the SSPs but to the Akali jathedars and halqa-incharge”.
