Dal khalsa welcomes Scotland referendum

Hoshiarpur, In the backdrop of Scotland going for referendum on Thursday, the Dal Khalsa said allowing the Scottish people to have their say in shaping their destiny displayed the political maturity of the UK.

Party head HS Dhami and spokesperson Kanwar Pal Singh said in a statement here on Monday that following in the footsteps of Canada that granted people of Quebec province the right to self-determination, UK had also allowed Scottish people to go for referendum, thus showing to the world the level of maturity its democracy had reached. They said the Sikh community supported movements for sovereignty irrespective of place, religion and race.

Dhami said without firing a single bullet, a new nation could be born on September 18 if the majority wished so.

Comparing the mindset and attitude of the Indian leadership with that of the UK leadership, he said the Indian state had always “crushed and suppressed” all legitimate struggles for right to self determination. He urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take cue from governments of Canada and UK and allow the people of Punjab, Kashmir and Nagaland to exercise their right to self determination without spilling the blood of the people.
