189 lakh hectares hit by rains: Centre

New Delhi, Rains and hailstorm affected 189 lakh hectares of crop area in the country, Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh today said in Rajya Sabha, revising his earlier figure of 94 lakh hectares.
Replying to a debate on the ‘Agrarian Crisis’ in the country, he said the figure of 94 lakh hectares cited in Lok Sabha last week was based on the reports received from various states including Uttar Pradesh. The Minister had come under sharp attack last week for giving different figures at different times about the crop area affected.
He said “Uttar Pradesh in its report on April 16 said 29 lakh hectares were affected but in its report on April 24, the figure went up to 95 lakh hactares”.
Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Haryana were the worst hit states in the recent unseasonal rains and hailstorm and have sought over Rs 10,100 crore as relief from the Centre for the affected farmers, he had told Lok Sabha last week.
