HR officer to resume testimony as Duffy trial continues

imageOttawa, A human resource officer in the Senate is expected back on the stand today at the Ottawa trial of suspended Sen. Mike Duffy.
Crown prosecutors questioned Sonia Makhlouf Monday about $65,000 in contracts allegedly awarded to Duffy’s friend, Gerald Donahue, for research and consulting work.
Court heard that work billed to taxpayers allegedly included the printing and mounting of photos of his family, newspaper articles and of such people as former U.S. first lady Barbara Bush.

Crown prosecutor Jason Neubauer walked Makhlouf through some of the steps she would have taken as she evaluated contracts submitted by senators.
Asked if she would have approved of a request for a “photographic services” contract, Makhlouf said she would not and would probably “bring it to a higher level.”
Duffy faces 31 charges of fraud, bribery and breach of trust. His lawyer, Donald Bayne, has said that if his client is guilty of anything, it is administrative errors, and not criminal behaviour.
