DHURI (SANGRUR), Congress Deputy Leader in the Lok Sabha Capt Amarinder Singh today accused the Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal of betraying people of Punjab just for his own survival. He revealed that Mr Badal had already traded off state’s interests by giving extra water to Haryana when Punjab did not have enough for itself, just to please his masters in Delhi.
Addressing a series of well attended public rallies in support of the Congress-Sanjha Morcha candidate Simarpartap Singh Barnala at various places including Dhadogal, Bhullar Heri, and Bhalwan, Capt Amarinder pointed out, while Mr Badal was claiming not to spare a single drop of water for anyone, his government had already raised embankments of the Bhakra Main Line canal at Kanauhri to provide extra water to Haryana.
“Earlier he accepted Rs 2 crores from Devi Lal in 1977 to construct SYL and now he has again accepted Rs 3 crores from Haryana government to raise embankments and give extra water to Haryana”, he said, adding, Mr Badal was doing all this to please his BJP masters in Delhi and to ensure the survival of his government in Punjab.
Appealing the people to vote and elect Simarpartap Barnala, he said, it was important that Mr Badal was made to suffer a political setback so that he stops putting his personal interests above the interests of the state. “Otherwise as on now Mr Badal’s thinking starts and stops at his immediate family only”, he remarked. He pointed out the huge wealth the Badal family had accumulated in terms of hotel, transport and other business.
Referring to the scourge of drugs he said, there was hardly any village in Punjab that didn’t have the problem of addiction. “They have destroyed and devastated an entire generation in the state just to enrich themselves”, he said.
Capt Amarinder lashed out at the BJP government at the centre saying the Prime Minister Modi was yet to deliver on any of the great promises he made before elections. He pointed out, when Mr Modi had come to Punjab in February 2014 he had promised that the Punjabi farmers settled in Gujarat will not be harassed. “But the BJP government there (in Gujarat) is yet to withdraw the appeal against the Gujarat High Court orders which favours the Punjabi farmers”, he said, while condemning Mr Badal’s silence on the issue.
He also questioned credentials of Badal’s to claim themselves to be Akalis. He said, Akali Dal was a noble mission and movement and great leaders like Baba Kharak Singh had given their whole life to build it up. “Now what we have is not the Akali Dal, but the Badal gang”, he remarked.
Addressing the function, Leader of the opposition in the Vidhan Sabha, Sunil Jakhar asked the Badals to spell out what they had done during last eight years. He said, the only thing they had been saying was accusing others of betrayal and backstabbing while it is actually they who had back stabbed Punjab.
Speaking on the occasion former union minister and Patiala MLA, Ms Preneet Kaur said that had the Akalis done any work they would not have needed to bring in whole of government machinery MLAs, MPs, ministers and workers from across Punjab to campaign here. She said, this only showed their nervousness.
Simarpartap Singh Barnala recalled his family’s generations’ association with the people and promised to serve them in every possible manner.
Campaign Incharge Kewal Singh Dhillon also spoke on the occasion.
