Chandigarh, ThePunjab and Haryana High court today set aside the election of Congress MLA from Bhadaur (reserve) constituency Mohammed Sadique on the election petition filed by Akali Dalcandidate Darbara Singh Guru, a former bureaucrat who had joined politicsbefore 2012 Assembly election.
Guru had challenged a certificate produced by Sadiqe claiming benefit as a scheduled caste. Sadique, an eminent folk singer, had defeated Guru by about 7000 votes. Justice N K Sanghi had reserved the order on Guru’s petition onJanuary 22 last.
Guru had filed a petition against the election of Muhammad Sadiq from Bhadaur reserve assembly constituency of Punjab in January 30, 2012. He had had contended that being a Muslim, Sadiqe was not entitled to contest from a reserve seat.
Sadiqe had claimed that he belonged to the Doom community notified by the Punjabgovernment as scheduled caste. And moreover, he had converted to Sikhism a few years ago.
