Chandigarh, The timely pro-farmer initiative taken by the Congress chief Mrs Sonia Gandhi at the time when this section considered to be the backbone of the country was facing crisis complicated by the untimely rains would go a long way in electrifying the party.
In a statement, the party MLA from Ferozepur Mr Parminder Singh Pinky said no government could succeed by ignoring the farmers and that had been the historical experience. The Bharatiya Janata Party was never perceived to the party articulating the concerns of the farmers. This perception got further reinforced within no time of Mr Narendra Modi taking over at the head of the BJP government while issuing legislation to amend the land acquisition legislation that was enacted by the UPA government to protect the interests of the farmers. This also exposed the doubled standards of the ruling Akali Dal which is part of the Modi government and supported this anti-farmer move.
He said the overwhelming response that Mrs Gandhi received in the villages, the latest being in Haryana, was a very clear indication that the people had got fed up with the Modi government within months which had been unabashedly implementing anti-farmer policies to please the corporate lobby that had funded the BJP poll campaign. Now was the time for the Modi government to pay back but in the process, it was the interests of the people which had been bartered away.
He asserted it was the Congress which all along had been championing the concerns of the farmers and it was in this background that Mrs Gandhi was going around to boost up the morale of the farmers whose crops had been severely damaged due to inclement weather but the government had failed to announce any compensation. The woes being narrated by the people to Mrs Gandhi were heart-rending.
He said the Congress was back on the path of recovery as the people had realised the difference between the BJP and the Congress. Mr Modi and his BJP sold false dreams to the people and the same had been now admitted by the ruling party leaders. The Congress would continue to take up the issues concerning every sections of society under the leadership of Mrs Gandhi and it was time for the party men at every level to sink their differences and work for the single point agenda that was to establish direct connect with the people following the footsteps of the party chief, he added
