Dhuri (Sangrur), Four Left parties, CPI, CPM, CPM-Punjab (Pasla) and CPI-ML Liberation, have fielded a joint candidate, Sukhdev Sharma, for the April 11 Dhuri Assembly byelection.
Hardev Arshi, CPI state secretary, made the announcement here today. He said Sharma would file his nomination papers on March 24.
The decision was taken following a meeting between the leaders of the four Left parties today.
Punjab unit secretary of All-India Trade Union Council and a member of the CPI state council, Sharma had unsuccessfully contested the Lok Sabha election from Sangrur in May last year. He has served Dhuri as a municipal councillor from 1992-97.
Arshi said top leaders of the four parties would hold a meeting on April 1 and finalise their agenda. He alleged the Congress had failed to learn any lesson from its repeated poll defeats. He said despite the debacles, the party was supporting the policies of privatisation and liberalisation.
The CPI state chief alleged the SAD had betrayed the farmers by voting in favour of the new Land Acquisition Act. “During the Dhuri bypoll, the Left parties will work towards exposing the anti-farmer stance of the Akali Dal,” he said.
