Phagwara, Arun Khosla of the BJP, loyalist of local MLA and Chief Parliamentary Secretary Som Parkash, was today unanimously elected first Mayor of the Phagwara municipal corporation. Akali Dal councillors Surinder Singh Walia and Ranjit Singh Khurana too were elected unanimously as Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor.
Akali councillor Walia and Om Parkash Bittu of the BJP proposed Khosla’s name while Kulwinder Singh (SAD) and Rohit Pathak (BJP) proposed Walia’s for the post of Deputy Mayor. BJP councillor Anurag Mankhand proposed the name of Khurana for the Senior Deputy Mayor’s post. All the three candidates were elected unanimously in the presence of all the Congress, BSP and Independent councillors. Som Parkash attended the meeting as ex officio member of the corporation.
The meeting began with an oath-taking ceremony of all the councillors, held under the chairmanship of Jalandhar Divisional Commissioner R Venkata Ratnam. BJP ministers Madan Mohan Mittal and Anil Joshi, BJP state president Kamal Sharma and national secretary Tarun Chugh accompanied Khosla and others as they took charge in the House.
