Montreal , Montreal’s mayor is taking steps to try to maintain home mail delivery in light of Canada Post’s move to community mailboxes in cities.
Denis Coderre will be asking his legal department to look into joining a legal challenge that’s been launched by the Canadian Union of Postal Workers.
His announcement may be just the start of a movement because the Union of Quebec municipalities may take similar action.
Suzanne Roy, the president of the UMQ and other municipal mayors were at Coderre’s side on Thursday to express their opposition to ending home delivery.
Coderre says the city is seeking the status of intervener in the federal court case.
Canada Post announced its plans to install community mailboxes in December 2013 and has given itself five years to implement the move.
