Allahabad, The Allahabad High Court on Monday dismissed a Public Interest Litigation seeking directions for removal of Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti from the Union Council of Ministers and initiation of criminal proceedings against her for making allegedly communally sensitive remarks at an election rally in Delhi.
A division bench, comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice Suneet Kumar, made it clear that it “would not entertain” the petition as the relief sought in it was “misconceived”.
The PIL was filed by A N Nomani, a member of the Nagar Palika at Banda, who had sought action against the Sadhvi, the Minister of State for Food Processing Industries and BJP MP from Fatehpur Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh.
The remarks, made in early December, had caused a furore in Parliament during the winter session, prompting Prime Minister Narendra Modi to step in and issue a statement on the floor of the House in the Rajya Sabha with a view to pacifying the Opposition which had demanded her expulsion.
