Toronto, An extreme cold warning has ended for Toronto after a morning of bitterly cold wind chill values.
As of 6:30 a.m. the temperature in Toronto was a frigid -23 C, feeling more like -34 with the wind chill.
Environment Canda cancelled the warning around 11 a.m. as the temperature rose to -19 C, feeling like -26 with the wind chill.
That temperature is expected to rise to a high of -13 C Friday afternoon, however the wind chill will make it feel more like -25. About 2 centimetres of snow is also expected to fall late this evening.
While temperatures are improving slightly, an extreme cold weather alert remains in effect for the city to ensure expanded shelter space for the homeless.
TTC service was also affected by the cold Friday morning, with buses running to replace streetcar service on the 502 Downtowner and 503 Kingston routes.
The cold weather has triggered a number of school closures and school bus cancellations in parts of the province (For a full list, click here).
All schools under the Waterloo Region District School Board and Waterloo Region Catholic District School Board are shut down today. However there were no reported closures in the GTA.
The city could see a reprieve over the weekend, with the temperature expected to rise somewhat. A high of -3 C is expected Saturday. With the warmer temperatures, Toronto could also see five to 10 cm of snow Saturday.
The temperature is expected to hold at a high of -3 C Sunday, with a 40 per cent chance of flurries.
