Asia Cup 2008 was the last time that the mega event was hosted by Pakistan. Unlike 2023, the Indian cricket team agreed to visit Pakistan in 2008. They even made it to the finals of the tournament, where they lost against the Sri Lankan cricket team.
15 years have passed since that tournament. Only Rohit Sharma is the common member in the 2008 and 2023 Indian squads. Here’s a look at the Indian squad that played in Asia Cup 2008, and where those players are now.
Batters – MS Dhoni (c), Gautam Gambhir, Suresh Raina, Virender Sehwag, Rohit Sharma and Robin Uthappa
MS Dhoni captained the side. Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag featured in the team as openers, while youngsters Robin Uthappa, Suresh Raina and Rohit Sharma batted in the middle-order. Sharma is currently the captain of the Indian cricket team. Dhoni, Gambhir, Sehwag, Raina and Uthappa have retired. While Dhoni plays in IPL, the other names participated in overseas T10 and T20 leagues.
All-rounders – Yuvraj Singh (vc), Piyush Chawla, Yusuf Pathan and Irfan Pathan
Yuvraj Singh was the deputy skipper of the Indian squad in 2008. Joining him as spin-bowling all-rounders were Piyush Chawla and Yusuf Pathan. Irfan Pathan was the pace-bowling all-rounder. Chawla is still active as a cricketer, while Singh and Pathan brothers have retired and play in other T20 competitions now.
Bowlers of India in Asia Cup 2008 – Manpreet Gony, Praveen Kumar, Pragyan Ojha, Ishant Sharma and RP Singh
Manpreet Gony formed the pace attack along with Praveen Kumar, Ishant Sharma and RP Singh. Pragyan Ojha was the lead Indian spinner. Except Ishant, the bowlers have retired now. Gony, Kumar, Ojha and Singh are all actively playing in other T20 leagues.
