Woman arrested in $1.5M scam targeting prospective immigrant workers

Toronto, A Toronto woman is facing a combined 39 charges in connection with her involvement in a recruiting agency that allegedly bilked prospective immigrant workers out of more than $1.5 million.
Police began an investigation into GoWest Jobs International on Finch Avenue near Keele Street in October.
According to police, individuals, many of them of Filipino descent, would be recruited for jobs in Canada by the agency and then asked to provide payment in order for references, employment contracts and other documents to be prepared.
Police say the victims would then submit those documents as part of their application to work in Canada and would be denied entry due to fraudulent documents and banned from reapplying for two years.
Imelda Fronda Saluma, 46, of Toronto, was arrested on Wednesday and charged with 39 offences, including 11 counts of fraud over $5,000, nine counts of obtain money by false pretense and one count of make document without authority.
Police believe there may be additional victims.
