COVID-19 update: India logs 1,968 new infections, 15 fatalities in last 24 hours

India logged 1,968 new coronavirus infections, the lowest in 133 days, raising the tally to 4,45,99,466, while the active cases declined to 34,598, the Union Health Ministry said on Tuesday.

The death toll climbed to 5,28,716 with 15 more fatalities, which included eight deaths reconciled by Kerala, data updated by the ministry at 8 am stated.

A total of 1,675 cases were recorded in a span of 24 hours on May 23. The active cases comprise 0.08 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate increased to 98.74 per cent, the health ministry said. A decline of 1,528 cases has been recorded in the active COVID-19 case count in a span of 24 hours, it said.

The daily positivity rate was recorded at 0.94 per cent, while the weekly positivity rate was recorded at 1.29 per cent, the ministry said. The number of people who have recuperated from the disease surged to 4,40,36,152. The case fatality rate was 1.19 per cent. According to the ministry, 218.80 crore doses of coronavirus vaccine have been administered in the country so far under the nationwide COVID-19 inoculation drive.

India’s COVID-19 tally crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7, 2020, 30 lakh on August 23, 40 lakh on September 5 and 50 lakh on September 16. It went past 60 lakh on September 28, 70 lakh on October 11, crossed 80 lakh on October 29, 90 lakh on November 20 and surpassed the one-crore mark on December 19, 2020. The country crossed the grim milestone of two crore cases on May 4, 2021, three crore cases on June 23 and four crore cases on January 25 this year.

The seven fatalities reported in the past 24 hours included two from Odisha and one each from Chattisgarh, Delhi, Haryana, Karnataka and West Bengal.

Delhi on Monday reported one more Covid-related fatality and 39 fresh cases with a positivity rate of 1.56 per cent, according to data issued by the city health department here. With the new cases, Delhi’s COVID-19 tally has climbed to 20,03,576 while the death toll has risen to 26,503, the department said in its latest bulletin.

The new cases were detected from 2,496 tests conducted the previous day, it said. Delhi on Sunday logged 76 cases with a positivity rate of 1.12 per cent. On Saturday, it saw 92 COVID-19 cases with a positivity rate of 1.20 per cent, while it recorded 87 infections with a positivity rate of 1.19 per cent, and one fatality due to it on Friday.

The number of active COVID-19 cases in Delhi stands at 356. A total of 282 patients are under home isolation, the bulletin said. Of the 8,857 beds reserved for COVID-19 patients in various city hospitals, 56 are occupied, it said. The number of daily COVID-19 cases in Delhi touched a record high of 28,867 on January 13 during the third wave of the pandemic.

The city recorded a positivity rate of 30.6 per cent on January 14, the highest during the third wave.

Mumbai on Monday recorded 66 new cases of coronavirus that raised the tally of infections to 11,50,546, an official from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said. The toll remained unchanged at 19,733, while the count of recoveries reached 11,39,099 after 51 patients recovered from the infection in the last 24 hours, he said.

There has been a drop in daily infections, as the city had recorded 102 cases and a fatality on Sunday. Of the 66 cases reported during the day, only two patients were symptomatic, the civic body said. With a recovery rate of 98.2 per cent and doubling rate of 8,683 days, the city currently has 714 active cases.

Telangana on Monday recorded 73 new COVID-19 cases, taking the overall caseload to 8,38,108. Hyderabad district reported the highest number of cases with 43. A COVID-19 bulletin said 94 people recuperated from the infection raising the cumulative number of recoveries till date to 8,33,388. The recovery rate rose to 99.44 per cent. No fresh fatality occurred due to the infectious disease and the death toll continued to be 4,111.

The bulletin said 7,378 samples were tested on Monday. The number of active cases was 609, it said.

The COVID-19 tally in Madhya Pradesh reached 10,54,356 on Monday after the detection of 13 cases at a positivity rate of 0.3 per cent, a health official said. The death toll remained unchanged at 10,771, while the recovery count increased by 12 to touch 10,43,473, he added. The state has an active caseload of 112, the official said.

With 3,506 samples examined during the day, the number of coronavirus tests in MP went up to 3,00,56,804, he added. A government release said 13,31,80,250 COVID-19 vaccine doses have been administered so far in the state, including 10,376 on Monday.

Chhattisgarh on Monday reported 66 new COVID-19 cases at a positivity rate of 1.64 per cent, taking the overall tally to 11,76,447, while the death toll increased by one to reach 14,135, an official said. The recovery count stood at 11,61,929 after 97 people recovered during the day, leaving the state with 383 active cases, he said.

Raipur led with 15 cases, followed by 10 in Durg, among other districts. No coronavirus cases were reported in 13 of the 28 districts, the official said. With 4,019 swab samples examined during the day, the tally of tests carried out so far in the state went up to 1,86,52,326, he added.

Tamil Nadu continued to maintain a slight decline in fresh coronavirus cases and the State on Monday saw 461 new infections, taking the overall tally to 35,84,563. The death toll however remained at 38,047, as no fatalities were reported today, according to a bulletin from the State health department.

As many as 489 people were infected by the pandemic on Sunday. A total of 35,41,177 COVID-19 positive patients were discharged following treatment to date and this includes 537 people who recovered today. The number of active cases remains at 5,339.

While Chennai recorded 97 fresh cases today, infections in Chengalpattu and Coimbatore fell below the 50 mark, registering 41 and 30 cases respectively.

Gujarat on Monday reported 62 COVID-19 cases, raising the tally in the state to 12,74,989, while the death toll remained unchanged at 11,035, an official said. The recovery count rose by 91 and touched 12,63,175, leaving the state with an active caseload of 779, he added. Surat led with 24 new cases, followed by 23 in Ahmedabad, five in Vadodara, among other districts.

A government release said 17,058 persons got jabs during the day, which took the overall number of COVID-19 vaccine doses administered so far in the state to 12.70 crore. Gujarat’s COVID-19 figures are as follows: Positive cases 12,74,989, new cases 62, death toll 11,035, discharged 12,63,175, active cases 779, people tested so far – figures not released.
