Google is planning to kill off Chrome Lite mode with the release of Chrome version M100 next month.

Chrome Lite mode was a browser feature for Android that was introduced back in 2014 as Chrome Data Saver to help people use less mobile data on their phones and load web pages faster.

Google Chrome’s support manager Craig in an announcement post on the Google Chrome Help page said the decision to end Chrome Lite mode was taken in light of the reduced cost for mobile data in many countries.

He adds that Google has shipped many improvements to Chrome to further minimise data usage and improve web page loading and there was no need for a separate mode for the same. “Although Lite mode is going away, we remain committed to ensuring Chrome can deliver a fast webpage loading experience on mobile,” Craig concludes.

When Android users used Chrome Lite mode, some of their web traffic went through Google servers before being downloaded to their device. If the page is loaded slowly, Google claimed its servers would simplify it so that less data gets downloaded to the user’s device.

When a user went to a secure page that used HTTPS, Chrome used to send the URL to Google to load faster when the Lite mode was on. However, Google says only the URL is sent and Chrome doesn’t share the user’s cookies or personal data.

However, Lite mode didn’t work while private browsing on Incognito mode and caused some websites trouble finding the user’s location. Users also couldn’t access or use pages on a local network, like an internal company site with Lite mode on in Chrome Android browsers.
