On Tuesday, February 15, in Tiruvallur district, a 20-year-old college student died after allegedly consuming pesticide. The girl was staying at an ashram in Tiruvallur and was undergoing treatment given by a self-styled godman called Munusamy.
The girl, Hemamalini, was brought to the ashram by her parents in 2020, and she was being treated for various chronic ailments like stomach ache and neck pains. The girl was allegedly made to participate in several poojas during no moon and full moon days by the godman under the pretext of doshams that are there for the girl.
On Tuesday, Hemamalini allegedly started to vomit in the ashram. The girl’s aunt, Indrani, was at the spot and told the self-styled guru that Hemamalini needed to be hospitalised.
The family alleged that the girl and her aunt were provided with an autorickshaw by Munusamy only after a couple of hours. The family alleged that there was some foul play and even added that the girl was never allowed to leave the ashram.
Hemamalini, who was doing a BSc in computer science, was not allowed to go to college, despite offline classes having begun.
Hemamalini was taken to the Thiruvallur government hospital, where she died without responding to treatment. The doctors who attended to her said that Hemamalini had consumed pesticide .
Meanwhile, Munusamy, the self-styled godman, is now being questioned by the police. He claimed to cure ailments with poojas and herbal treatment. He also has an ashram at Vellathukottai near Poondi.
The girl’s body has been sent for postmortem and further investigations are underway.
