Punjab elections 2022: Charanjit Singh Channi’s chopper grounded due to PM Narendra Modi’s movement

Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, on Monday, claimed that his chopper was not allowed to take off due to PM Narendra Modi’s visit to the state.

Channi was slated to join Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s election rally in Hoshiarpur, while PM Modi was slated to campaign in Jalandhar ahead of Punjab Assembly elections 2022.

Officials said that Channi’s chopper was not allowed to take off due to a no-fly zone over the airport due to Prime Minister’s movement. Commenting on the development, Channi said – ‘I am a chief minister, not a terrorist’.

“I was in Una at 11 am but suddenly permission to fly (to Hoshiarpur) was denied due to PM Modi’s movement, it was declared a no-fly zone. I was not able to attend Rahul Gandhi’s rally in Hoshiarpur. I had permission to land,” Channi said.

The police administration asked me to go back by helicopter: PM

The incident comes barely a month after the security breach of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cavalcade, wherein PM’s convoy was stuck for almost 20 minutes on a flyover during his visit to Punjab. On Sunday, Home Minister Amit Shah took a jibe at Channi saying how could he protect Punjab when he could not ensure the security of PM Modi.

Meanwhile, addressing a rally in Jalandhar, PM Modi said, “I wanted to pay obeisance at Devi Talab Mandir (in Jalandhar) but the police administration asked me to go back by helicopter. This is the state of affairs of the Punjab government.” Punjab goes to the polls in a single phase on February 20. The results for Punjab Assembly elections 2022 will be declared on March 10.
