Air India cabin crew calls for strike, crucial meeting to be held in Kerala’s Kochi

A meeting between Air India Express Employees Union (AIXEU) and the management is set to be held in Kochi on Monday. The meeting is being held in the wake of Air India cabin crew calling for an indefinite strike from January 15.

They have placed several demands and if the management does not address the concerns, the strike will go on as planned.

Over 500 cabin crew under the AIXEU will join the strike. Those going on strike alleged that the management has shown severe discrimination while issuing new contracts. The contract period of the cabin crew has been reduced to one year from five years. Meanwhile, new recruits and other staff members were given five-year contracts triggering the row. The AIXEU has sent a strike notice to the CEO.

According to KK Vijayakumar, president, AIXEU, the meeting will be a deciding factor. Serious discussions will be held. We hope to reach an agreement on the major concerns like five-year contract, said Vijayakumar.

Subramanyam, National Public Sector In Charge, BMS said that they had even met with Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia to discuss the issue. The crew had been involved in the Vande Bharat mission and has been part of the rescue of thousands of Indians. We will fight till the end. We want the government and the management to restore the five-year contracts. We want the legitimate rights of the workers to be restored. We have spoken to various officials of the management to no avail. We hope these negotiations will be fruitful, Subramanyam said.

Incidentally, 70 per cent of the association consists of cabin crew. Many flight operations will suffer if the strike goes as planned.
