Pune: A woman techie from Pune district of Maharashtra has been cheated of Rs 91,000 by a fraudster she met on a matrimonial site. The cheat took the money from software engineer on the pretext of his mother’s illness.
The matter came to light after the 28-year-old victim came to know that the accused was arrested in the past in a similar cheating case.
The victim has filed a complaint at Sangvi police station under Pimpri Chinchwad jurisdiction. The victim works with an IT firm in Bengaluru, according to a report in Indian Express. The woman had been working from home in Pune view of the COVID pandemic.
The victim came in contact with the accused through a matrimonial site in November 2020 and the two were in contact since then. Sometime later, the cheat told the woman that his mother is ill and he needed the money for her treatment. The techie then transferred Rs 91,000 to the accused.
When the woman came to know about the alleged criminal identity of the accused recently, she demanded her money back, but the cheat stopped taking her calls. The woman then approached police and an FIR was filed following a preliminary probe.
The city police have advised people to be cautious while talking to prospective brides and grooms on matrimonial websites. A police officer said that people must be extra-cautious when they are asked for money on one pretext or the other.
