Pune: Another shocking incident of fraud was reported from Maharashtra’s Pune, where a 32-year-old software engineer was cheated to a tune of Rs 14.32 lakh by cybercrooks. The man met the woman on a matrimonial site and she posed as an NRI.

The young man in his complaint to the police said that he ended up losing money to cyber frauds paying customs charges and fines for foreign currency she brought with her.

Reportedly the incident took place between July and August.

After verifying the details, the Chikhli police lodged an FIR against the unidentified accused. The victim came across one message from the fraudster on a matrimonial site for divorcees. The incident came to light after the fraudster posed as an NRI woman demanded money to pay customs charges.

In his complaint to the police, the techie noted that the ‘NRI woman’ told him that she wanted to visit India. Meanwhile, he gets a call from another woman saying that his ‘NRI friend’ has been detained at the Delhi airport. She was detained by the Customs department as she was carrying a substantial amount of UK Pound Sterling. In order to solve the problem, he is supposed to pay the given amount as a fine.

Subsequently, the victim made three transfers to the bank accounts which were provided by the woman pretending to be customs official. She then started demanding more money, after which the techie lodged a police complaint.

While commenting on the entire episode, cybercrime cell’s investigating officer and assistant inspector Pramila Kshirsagar said, “The complainant had serious differences with his wife, and they decided to separate. He registered himself with a matrimonial website for divorcees,” as saying was quoted by the Times of India.
